Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR

After a slow start, the Mercedes CLK-GTR dominated the GT class in 1997. As a result in 1998 BMW withdrew and Porsche was forced to produce another car, the GT1-98. In 1998, the CLK-GTR LM was introduced which was lighter and lower than the original. It did not win LeMans because of mechanical problems but led Mercedes to an unbeaten season in the Fia GT. In 1999, Mercedes once again tried for a victory in Lemans but was unsuccessful because an error in the design caused the car to go air-borne and flip at high speeds.
