Chevrolet C6 Corvette ZR1

The Corvette ZR1 is the king of the C6 generation and features a 620 HP Supercharged LS9 V8. The enabler of the LS9’s phenomenal performance and refinement is a large, positive-displacement Roots-type supercharger with a new, four-lobe rotor design. It is augmented with an integrated charge cooling system that reduces inlet air temperature for maximum performance.

To put the extra power to the ground the ZR1 uses a stronger 6 speed manual transmission featuring a twin-disc clutch, As the term implies, the twin-disc clutch system employs a pair of discs, which spreads out the engine’s torque load over a wider area. This enables tremendous clamping power when the clutch is engaged. It also dissipates heat better and extends the clutch life.

With the added power, it's also important to be able to stop quicker so the ZR1 is the first Corvette to feature Carbon Ceramic brakes which were previously only found in high priced exotics. Of course its $100,000 price tag isn't cheap and you probably won't be seeing one everyday but relatively speaking it's still quite a bargain.

Unlike the Z06 which could be confused for a normal Corvette other than a few badges and different wheels, Chevy made sure no one will confuse the ZR1 for anything else. Most noticeable is the see through glass in the hood showcasing the supercharged beast in all its glory. ZR1 badges on the front fender and rear bumper will intimidate anyone even thinking about a red light challenge and once you're inside, the ZR1 logo is prominently displayed on the door sills, tach, and headrests.

A final major difference is the 20-spoke alloy rims that measure 19 inches in diameter in the front and 20 inches in the rear. They come standard with a bright, Sterling Silver paint finish and chrome versions are optional. The wheels are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires developed specifically for the ZR1, measuring P285/30ZR19 in front and P335/25ZR20 in the rear.

The C6 Corvette debuted as a 2005 model featuring a 6.0 liter LS2 producing 400 HP. For 2008, a new 6.2 liter version known as the LS3 was introduced with 30 more horsepower. Other changes included improved steering feel, a new 5 spoke wheel design, and a new full leather interior option to help bring the Corvette's interior up to the competition. A 6 speed manual transmission is standard while an optional 4 speed automatic is available for those who don't deserve to be driving a Corvette. The optional Z51 performance package offers more aggressive dampers and springs, larger stabilizer bars, Goodyear Supercar tires with an asymmetrical tread pattern, and larger, cross-drilled brake rotors for outstanding handling performance that is still comfortable for daily driving. The Z51 brings the C6 up to the performance levels of the previous gen Z06 but at a lower cost. In terms of styling, not a lot changed since the C5 but thats not a bad thing. Chevy gave a great looking car a face lift and made it look even better.

2013 Chevrolet Corvette 427 Convertible – Z06 Powered!

The 2013 Corvette 427 Convertible is the fastest Corvette convertible ever made and it can thank the mighty Z06 for that. Under the hood is the same 427 cubic-inch V8 putting out 505 horsepower and 470 lbs. of torque. It has the same rear axles as the Z06 and also features the same magnetic ride control system. It also has in common that it's only available with a 6 speed manual transmission. 0-60mph is expected to come in 3.8 seconds and acceleration will continue to over 190mph!

Road-Test: 2011 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible in the Arizona Desert

I woke up at 730am well rested or as well rested as you can be during a trip to Vegas. We had discussed going to the Grand Canyon the night before either by helicoptor or by car. A helicopter from our hotel was about $400 so decided to see how much it would much cheaper it would be to rent a car.

We called up a few places and the best we found was a Chevy Malibu for $50 for the day with unlimited mileage. Heck of a deal when split 4 ways. But this is Vegas and a bachelor party, surely we can find something a little more fun and with some more style. So we all make a few calls and my friend comes back and says I’m waiting for the guy from Enterprise’s Exotic Collection to call me back. What magical words to hear.

We had joked about renting a Ferrari before the trip started so my imagination starts running wild at this point. Get the call back, best he can do is a 2011 Corvette Convertible. Not bad I think but I’ve seen quotes as high as $500/day for a rental Corvette so I didn’t get that excited. Then he goes, only $150 for the day plus 25 cents/mile for anything over 100 miles. We did the math and split 2 ways, it would be roughly $140/person to drive a brand new Corvette through the Desert from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon. How could we not?

Parked Right Out in Front

We get to the rental place and there it is right out in front. Shiny as hell and sporting one of the most beautiful colors I’ve ever seen on a Vette. Holy crap this is actually happening. We go inside to fill out the paperwork. I should also note my other 2 friends were renting a BMW Z4 Convertible. “Insurance for the Z4 is $50 but we don’t offer it on the Vette, we want nothing to do with it once you leave the lot.” My heart sinks, I’m 2500 miles from home with absolutely zero proof of insurance. “Don’t worry he says, all we need is a quick call to your insurance company to verify you have rental coverage.” After an extremely nerve racking 5 minutes, my insurance company verifies that I do indeed have rental coverage, even on 430HP V8 RWD sports cars!

I sign the paperwork and he hands over the key. It all becomes reality. I’m about to start up a 2011 Corvette and drive it through wide open desert roads! We give it a quick once over to check for scratches, dents, etc. but it’s pristine. I get in turn the key and am greeted with one of the best sounding rumbles I’ve heard in my life. Give it a little gas and the LS3 opens up with a monstrous roar. $140 well spent, I think to myself, but of course the day is only starting.

I pull out of the lot and right in front of us is a huge tunnel with little traffic. What timing! Pedal to the floor, the tranny downshifts to 2nd (only automatics available unfortunately), and the car shoots like a bat out of hell with a deafening roar!

Then we hit some traffic and I’m reminded of just how big a 2 seater can be. At low speeds, the Vette feels sluggish and out of place. It also doesn’t help that when you’re driving a car like this for the first time, you automatically think everyone and their mother is doing their best to hit you.

After a few wrong turns, we finally make it to the highway and it really begins to hit me how cool this actually is. I’ve seen pictures of the beautiful wide open desert highways but it’s a totally different experience when you’re actually driving on them. Having a 360 degree view is also a huge help.

Traffic clears and I mash the throttle again. It’s a crazy feeling to be able to jump out in front of cars moving at highway speeds as if they’re standing still. It’s also crazy to realize just how quickly a Corvette can get up to license suspending speeds with such little effort. Let’s just say I have a new found respect for Corvette owners that are able to keep their licenses.

Time to slow it down and enjoy the ride. I was expecting a nice rumble at cruising speeds but was disappointed to find the engine was almost completely silent. Handling is excellent as expected and the 285/35ZR19s in the rear grip the road like no other. They also transmit every road imperfection including the lines of paint on the road, in a good way though. The ride itself is very comfortable and perfect for a long cruise through the desert.

What surprised me most was just how much of a celebrity driving a Corvette can make you. Everyone gives you the thumbs up as they pass by and random people will just start talking to you gas stations. I would expect that from a Ferrari or Lambo, but would’ve thought Corvettes were too common. Apparently I was very wrong

About 200 miles later, we see a lot of dust on the road in front of us. Someone decided to stop paving a well traveled route for about 7 miles just for the hell of it, or at least that’s how it seems. It may seem like theheight of lunacy to take a low profile sports car for 7 miles on a dirt road but we’ve come so far, no turning back now.

The Vette held up quite well though started to shake violently at speeds over 25mph. We kept our distance and watched as the SUVs we had just blown by overtook us with ease.

Finally we made it to the Grand Canyon and were met by guards telling us we couldn’t go any further and had to hop on a bus. So much for the great photo opportunities I was hoping for with the Vette. I guess some regular Canyon shots will have to do.

The ride home was more of the same. As I became more comfortable with the Vette, I started to appreciate just how amazing of a machine it really is. The funny thing though is after a while it actually starts to feel a little slow. The heart-pounding adrenaline rush turns into a subtle grin and a thirst for a bit more power. Of course, that’s why there’s the Z06 and ZR-1. Maybe next time I’m in Vegas.

This limited edition Corvette slots between the Z06 and ZR1. Created to be the ultimate Vette for the track, the Z06 Carbon combines the lightweight N/A engine of the Z06 with the brembo brakes, Magnetic Selective Ride Control, and carbon fiber body panels from the ZR1. According to Tadge Juechter, Corvette Chief Engineer, "For technical tracks like Laguna Seca, the Z06 Carbon could shave up to three seconds off the Z06 lap time."

The Corvette Z06 Carbon will be available in two colors: Inferno Orange and the all-new Supersonic Blue. Black headlamps and mirrors, a ZR1-style body color spoiler, body color door handles, carbon fiber raised hood, and black carbon fiber rockers and splitter enhance the Z06's dynamic design and reduce mass and aerodynamic lift. For track events, customers can also install the Euro-styled racing numbers that come with each car.

An optional Z07 performance package that includes the mechanical upgrades introduced on the Z06 Carbon can be added to a regular 2011 Z06. This package also includes Competition Gray 20-spoke wheels and all the chassis and cooling upgrades.
